If you’ve watched a crew park a drilling rig on your street, dig a few holes, and then disappear for two weeks, you’ve probably wondered what’s going on. Fair question. Fiber construction looks slow and confusing from the outside because most of the work happens underground or inside a trailer, and the steps don’t happen in the order you’d guess.
Here’s the whole process, start to finish.
Step one: figuring out where everything already is
Before anybody digs, someone has to map every gas line, water main, power line, phone cable, and irrigation pipe along the route. In town that means utility locates, the spray paint and little flags you see on the shoulder. Out in the county it also means talking to landowners, because plenty of buried lines never made it onto any map.
This step can eat weeks, and it’s the one nobody sees. Hitting a gas line is dangerous. Hitting a water main floods somebody’s pasture and shuts the job down. So crews wait on locates, walk the route, and adjust the plan. Slow here is the whole point.
The boring rig
Most fiber goes in the ground with a machine called a directional bore. It steers a drill head underground, from one pit to another, without opening a trench the whole way. That’s why you see a big rig parked in one spot for hours with almost nothing visible happening. The drill is working thirty or forty feet at a time under the road, under your driveway, under the caliche, while a locator with a handheld receiver walks above it tracking the head.
Once the bore path is done, the crew pulls back a bundle of orange conduit. That conduit is the whole prize. The glass comes later.
Boring is slow by nature. Rock slows it down. Wet ground slows it down. A road crossing needs permits and sometimes a flagging crew. A crew that bores a few hundred feet on a bad day and a couple thousand on a good one is normal.
Blowing in the fiber
With conduit in the ground, the actual fiber cable gets pushed or blown through it with compressed air, often thousands of feet at a shot. This part goes fast. If you blinked, you missed it. It’s also why the street can sit “finished” for a while with nothing lit up yet: conduit first, cable later, in big efficient runs.
Splicing, the part that decides whether your internet works
A fiber strand is glass about the width of a hair. To connect two of them, a tech strips the coating, cleaves the ends clean, and fuses them together with an electric arc in a machine called a fusion splicer. Every splice gets tested. A sloppy one weakens the signal for everyone past it.
A single cable can carry dozens or hundreds of strands, and every strand at every junction gets spliced by hand, one at a time, usually in a small trailer or tent so wind and dust stay off the glass. When you see a van parked at a pedestal (those green posts in the easement) for a full day, that’s what’s happening inside. This is careful, tedious work, and it’s where good construction gets separated from cheap construction.
The drop: getting from the street to your house
Everything up to now is the backbone. Your service comes from a drop, a smaller fiber run from the nearest pedestal or vault to the side of your house. That’s usually its own visit: a small bore or a plow line across the yard, a box mounted on the exterior wall, and a hole drilled through to wherever the equipment lives inside.
Then a tech lights it up, tests the signal level, and confirms it end to end. On our jobs that tech is a Plains Internet employee, somebody local, and if something’s off later you can get them back.
So why does it take months?
Add it up. Locates before any dirt moves. Bore rates set by soil and weather. Road crossings waiting on permits. Thousands of hand splices, each one tested. Then a separate drop and install for every single address. Fiber construction is a long chain of steps that each have to be done right, in order, and a shortcut anywhere shows up as outages for years afterward. Buried glass done properly will outlast the roof on your house. That’s the trade, and it’s a good one.
