About Sunray

Around Sunray.

Worth a stop

The firefighters memorial at Sunray City Hall honors the 19 firefighters, eight of them from Sunray, killed in the 1956 McKee refinery tank explosion south of town, one of the deadliest single-event firefighter losses in U.S. history.

A little history

Sunray started in 1929 as Altman, next to the first industrial plant in Moore County, and was renamed for the Sunray Oil Company when it took over the refinery in 1931. Many of the town's early buildings were built from recycled oil rig materials.

Mark the calendar

Sunray Funday, held every August, is the Lions Club's biggest fundraiser, with a Main Street parade, barbecue, vendors, a street dance, and a raffle. Proceeds stay in Sunray and Moore County.
