About Elk City

Around Elk City.

Worth a stop

The National Route 66 Museum, part of Elk City's Old Town Museum Complex, tells the story of the people who lived, worked, and traveled the Mother Road. Inside you can walk through all eight Route 66 states, with murals and vignettes recreating the eras of the road.

A little history

Elk City was surveyed and platted in March 1901 along Elk Creek, and its post office originally carried the name Busch. The name switched to Elk City in 1907, and a Shell Oil well that came in on Thanksgiving week of 1947 kicked off the oil boom that grew the town.

Mark the calendar

The Elk City Rodeo of Champions, a three-night PRCA rodeo held around Labor Day weekend, with a Saturday morning parade through downtown.
