About Amarillo

Around Amarillo.

Worth a stop

Cadillac Ranch, the public art installation of ten Cadillacs buried nose-first along I-40 west of town. The Ant Farm art collective built it in 1974, and visitors are welcome to spray-paint the cars.

A little history

Amarillo was platted in 1887 along the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway. It was originally called Oneida, then renamed for the nearby Amarillo Lake and creek, named for the yellow soil along the banks and the yellow wildflowers that bloom there each spring.

Mark the calendar

The Amarillo Tri-State Fair and Rodeo, held every September at the fairgrounds on SE 10th Ave. It's the largest annual event in the Texas Panhandle, with a PRCA rodeo and a downtown parade.
